Obviously, there will always be aspects of the legal system that are welcome to us, be this consumer law that protects our rights as a customer or employment law advice when our employer takes action that we believe to be unlawful. However, there are certain aspects of the legal system where people feel it should not intervene at all.
At the top of this list, for many people, is the right to end your own life. After all, people will argue that we put an animal to sleep to prevent it from suffering, so why can we not hope to receive assistance from a loved one to end our own pain?
The main reason for this is down to the fact that religious teachings still infringe on our law to a predominantly unwelcome extent. Secularists are fighting hard to detach our legal system from the outdated beliefs of religion and assisted suicide law is one of their primary objectives.
But it does go even further than religion alone. This issue also crosses over into the realm of human rights law and this is something that people who want the right to die, but need help from loved ones, have continued to argue through the highest courts of our land.
The law still stands at a point that if another person helps another to commit suicide - they could face a term of up to 14 years imprisonment. Whatever your beliefs in this regard, is it fair that people who have reached the end of their life and do not wish to suffer further, are forced to travel to other countries in order to end things in accordance with the law?
